IIT Kanpur Opens BTech Admissions Through Olympiads for 2025-26

One more significant step was taken by the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) as it started admission for the students to its BTech and BS programs based on their performance in international Olympiads from the academic year 2025-26. It is a gateway without JEE exam, IIT Kanpur will reserve seats in five departments: biological sciences and bioengineering, computer science and engineering, chemistry, economic sciences, and mathematics and statistics.

The main focus of this initiative is to recognize talented students who have excelled in international Olympiads in subjects like mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and informatics. It is one more way for the students who want to pursue their degree in bachelor's from India’s top institute without taking JEE exam.

IITK will start the application form for this in the first week of March 2025 and end the registration process by the last week of March 2025.

Eligibility Criteria

Here is the overview of the eligibility criteria for this process:

Students who were previously admitted to an IIT through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) or who had an IIT admission canceled are not eligible for this program.

BTech admissions: Selection Process

The selection process at IIT Kanpur includes two stages:

  1. Department Review: Each department will select candidates based on their Olympiad rankings.
  2. Final Examination and Interview: Selected candidates need to appear for a written exam and some may be called for an interview

Finally, a selection committee, headed by the Dean of Academic Affairs, will check the departmental recommendations to ensure all available seats are filled without overlap.

We aim to create an innovative and diverse academic environment that encourages critical thinking. This initiative will help us support innovation in key fields that contribute to India’s growth and competitiveness on the world stage.”
