NMC MBBS 2024: CBME Guidelines Address Disability and Transgender Rights, Impact on 3.6 Crore Students

The National Medical Commission has stepped back from its 2024 Competency-Based Medical Education guidelines which are followed by public criticism from transgender and disability rights groups. They are going to release the revised guidelines soon. An official circular that was published recently states that the NMC confirmed the guidelines which are cancelled and are no longer valid.

The decision to reinforce the new guidelines followed criticism from various groups, particularly transgender and disability rights advocates who argued that certain provisions were discriminatory.

The guidelines for 2024 CBME  have been criticized for failing to respect and uphold the rights of the queer community in medical education. By considering same-sex relations and cross-dressing as offenses and perversions, the guidelines violate the principles established by the Supreme Court which decriminalized same-sex relations and recognized transgender individuals as a distinct third gender entitled to the protection and social welfare benefits. This step which is taken not only disregards the court's rulings but also undermines the right to gender self-identification upheld by the Bombay High Court in the year 2021, perpetuating discriminatory practices that affect inclusivity in medical education.
