AICTE Data Shows 8-Year High in BTech Seats for 2024-25 After Slump

A sudden change is seen in the data published by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the number of BTech seats available nationwide has reached an eight-year high after years of decreasing intake and consolidation, mainly as a result of a decline in demand and government-mandated limitations

The number of seats for undergraduate engineering and technology programs for the 2024-25 academic year is set at 14.90 lakh, up by about 18.84% from 12.54 lakh seats in 2021-22, which was the lowest in ten years.

This increase follows a steady decline over most of the last decade, starting from around 17.05 lakh seats in 2014-15. The first rise in a decade happened in 2022-23, with a small increase of nearly 2%, and a further 5% increase the next year.

According to the data released by AICTE, Here is data on approved  seats for undergraduate intake from the year 2014 to 2025:

Years Seat(in lakh)
2014-15 17.05
2015-16 16.30
2016-17 15.56
2017-18 14.75
2018-19 14.05
2019-20 13.86
2020-21 12.86
2021-22 12.54
2022-23 12.74
2023-24 13.50
2024-25 14.90

AICTE data shows that Tamil Nadu’s approved intake increased from 2,75,830 seats last year to 3,08,686 seats this year, making it the highest among all states. Andhra Pradesh’s intake also increased, from 1,60,014 seats to 1,83,532 seats, placing it second after Tamil Nadu. Telangana’s seats rise from 1,25,344 to 1,45,557.

The overall increase in seats is mainly due to the removal of the ban on new BTech seats for 2023-2024 and new approvals for engineering and tech courses for working professionals, as explained by AICTE’s Member Secretary Rajive Kumar.

Kumar also stated that“The program for working professionals was introduced (in 2023-24). These are supernumerary seats. With this, the number of seats has gone up by around 40,000 to 50,000, and around 400 to 500 institutions have been approved for this program. These institutions have started taking admissions,”
