IIT Counselling 2024: Vacant Seats After JEE Process Revealed

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) has ended the admission process and classes have started. This year, a total of 17,760 IIT seats were on offer out of which  17,695 have been filled, as per the data shared by the Joint Admission Board (JAB) in the Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) report 2024.

This year, there were 375 more seats than last year’s total of 17,385. Every seat has been filled since 2019, a rare thing in past years. Back in 2018, 118 seats stayed empty because no one applied. In 2017, there were 110 empty seats, then 96 in 2016, 32 in 2015, just 3 in 2014, and 149 in 2013. R Subrahmanyam, who was the HRD secretary, once said that in 23 IITs, all 13,604 seats for new undergrad students were taken. Overall, fewer seats are left unfilled now compared to before COVID-19.

The only IITs where every seat was taken were IIT Bhubaneswar (496 seats), IIT Ropar (430 seats), IIT Goa (157 seats), and IIT Palakkad (200 seats), including extra seats. Last year, both IIT Goa and IIT Palakkad had no empty seats, and IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Indore, and IIT Bhubaneswar also filled all their spots.

According to certain institutions, candidates from IIT Bombay, Delhi, Indore, Hyderabad, Kanpur, Madras, and IIT Tirupati have been given additional seats.
