The Madras High Court recently helped a student who was by mistake admitted to a Bachelor of Dental Surgery course when they actually wanted to study Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery. Tthe student had applied for an MBBS seat on the basis of his eligibility, but due to some misunderstanding, he was given a BDS seat instead.
When the student knew about the mistake, he turned to the court for permission to transfer from BDS to MBBS. The court agreed to his plea, stating that it would be unfair for the student's future to deny the student's request to continue his chosen course due to an administrative error. Justice R. Vijayakumar, who handled the case, says that educational authorities should be more careful to prevent such types of errors, as it will have a major negative impact on students' futures.
Decision is taken after considering that Timothy is a very bright student and even obtained State first in ICSE Board of Studies in class 12th Standard.
The court’s decision on this case allows the student to continue their studies in the MBBS course, which he had opted for. This decision provides relief to the student but also a reminder for college authorities to improve their admission processes. It also shows the importance of fair treatment for students and also encourages institutions to be more vigilant, and ensures students are placed in courses which will match their qualifications and choices.
