The Supreme Court on Monday provided two weeks more time grant to the Centre-appointed seven-member expert panel to file its report on exam reforms after reviewing the National Testing Agency’s work in holding the NEET-UG.
On August 2 the apex court issued its formal order and expanded the remit of the seven-member expert panel, chaired by former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief K Radhakrishnan, to examine the work of the National Testing Agency (NTA) and suggest exam reforms to make the debate-filled NEET UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate), transparent and ethical NTA conducts an NEET exam every year for admission to various medical programs.
The apex court had also denied to yearly the NEET UG 2024 and said “ Right now there isn’t any strong evidence to show that there was a widespread leak in the system which is affecting the transparency of examination”
On Monday, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta came into sight for the Centre, told a bench chaired by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud that the last date for filing the report of the expert committee was ending, and requested to give two weeks more. The bench, which also included Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, accepted that the panel's report was almost complete and gave them another two weeks to submit it.
While broadening the role of the expert panel, the apex court pointed out several mistakes by the NTA, including a security breach at an exam center in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand. There, the back door of the secure room was opened, allowing unauthorized people to access the question papers. The court also noted that question papers were transported by e-rickshaws, and the wrong set of papers was given to some candidates.
Randeep Guleria, BJ Rao, Ramamurthy K, Pankaj Bansal, Aditya Mittal, and Govind Jaiswal other members of the expert committee were also present there. The bench said that besides the tasks assigned by the government and NTA, the committee will also focus on exam security, managing the exams, protecting data, and improving technology.
It announced that among its responsibilities would be collaboration and international cooperation, policy and stakeholder involvement, suggestions for student mental health care, and training for NTA staff.
