CAT 2024 DILR Section: Detailed Breakdown, Exam Format, and Marking Scheme
Introduction
The Common Admission Test is said to be an entrance exam for candidates who want to be admitted in management programs in the best and most prestigious institutions i.e the IIMs. One of the most challenging parts is The Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning which is popularly known as the DILR section. Based on recent patterns here is a detailed breakdown of the DILR section for CAT 2024:
DILR Section Format:
Total Number of Questions: There are between 20-22 questions which should be done in 40 minutes for this section. This section is divided into four to six sets of questions and each set covers 4-6 questions.
Each of the section is divided into two areas:
- Data Interpretation which includes the solving of problems related to data is provided in tables, graphs, charts, and diagrams.
- The Logical Reasoning area includes puzzles, seating arrangements, blood relations, and other logical problems.
Type of Questions:
The exam covers 14 to 16 Multiple Choice Questions from which candidates have to select the correct option from the choices given.
There are around 6 to 8 questions from TITA which is said to be Type In The Answer where candidates have to fill in the correct answer without options provided.
Marking Scheme For The Exam:
- Correct Answers for MCQs have plus3 marks
- Incorrect Answers for MCQs will be deducted minus 1
- Correct Answers for Non-MCQs questions have plus 3 marks
- Incorrect Answer for Non-MCQs will not have any negative marking
- No marks will be deducted for

Candidates have to prepare for the following Data Interpretation Topics:
- Tables

- Graphs i.e Pie Charts, Line Graphs, Bar Graphs, etc
- Caselets: Data presented in textual form.
- Data Sufficiency: Questions testing whether the provided data is sufficient to answer the question.

Logical Reasoning (LR) Topics:
- Arrangements (Linear, Circular, Grid-based)
- Puzzles: Related to teams, rankings, and scheduling.
- Blood Relations
- Seating Arrangements

Key Strategies For The Exam
- Candidates should identify and attempt the easier sets first as each set is equally difficult.
- Candidates should prepare for the exam by balancing the time and specific time should be given to each set.
