Recently Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced that there is an increase in 134% of medical seats in India over the past decade which as a result is aimed at the growing demand for healthcare professionals. The number of NEET PG seats has risen from 31,185 in 2014 to 70,000 as of 2024. which is driven by the government's concerted efforts to improve medical education and healthcare accessibility across the country
Mandaviya also said that in underserved areas this development and growth is part of a broader strategy to meet the healthcare needs of the population. This growth covers the establishment of new medical colleges which are funded under a Centrally Sponsored Scheme and upgrades district and referral hospitals into medical education institutions. In India, there is a significant rise in the number of medical colleges from 387 to 706 by early 2024.
The Union Health Minister also promises the brand integrity of premier institutions like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences will remain intact. The minister underscored that this type of development should be managed carefully by ensuring the best quality of education and healthcare delivery at the top standards.
This significant increase in PG seats comes as a first step for the development of MBBS graduates who are facing tough competition for a limited number of postgraduate seats in previous years. The increase also shows that the government has a great focus on strengthening India's healthcare infrastructure and fulfilling the shortage of trained medical professionals in rural areas.
