Supreme Court Mandates Sex Education in Schools to Curb Child Marriages

Introduction

The Supreme Court of India has recently launched the study of sex education in school curricula as a powerful measure to curb the alarming rise of child marriages. This decision is taken because of the growing rate of underage marriages in the country which is continuing after being illegal. The court believes that providing sex education at an early age will give young people knowledge about their rights but will also play an important role in preventing early-age marriages.

According to the court, Sex education should not only merely focus on biological aspects but also on other important topics like consent, reproductive health, gender equality, and the harmful effects of child marriages. The biggest aim behind this program is the link between a lack of education and early marriages. In rural areas, many young girls are forced to marry at an early age due to poverty, lack of education, and old beliefs. The court believes that with the introduction of sex education, the cycle of ignorance and child exploitation will break.

The court said that the role of teachers and parents plays a very important role in supporting this educational reform. Teachers should be given training to handle sensitive topics with care and parents will also need to understand the importance of sex education in safeguarding their children’s future concerning their security.

In addition to the educational measures, the court also said that there will be addressed gaps in the legal framework and enforcement of PCMA, 2006. It is also said that Child Marriage Prohibition Officers should be appointed at the district level, with the great responsibility to stop child marriages. The court also wants to set up special police units to work and control cases of child marriage swiftly without any delay because legal proceedings can be very harmful to the affected children.
