JNU to Launch Chhatrapati Shivaji Centre: Maharashtra Grants ?10 Crore

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) vice-chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit has proclaimed plans to start the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Centre of Excellence in the upcoming semester.  The JNU VC speaks to  ANI. "We wanted to bring a standard shift in the Indian knowledge system as well as substitute models to the study of India's security and strategic thought,”

She also stated “The present curriculum at JNU is mainly based on Western Anglo-American models. We analyze Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, especially his Naval wing, guerilla tactics, and his idea of Hindavi Swarajya, a socio-political movement promoting Indian sovereignty.”

The government of Maharastra funded INR  10 crore to the university to set up the Centre of Excellence. The vice chancellor said: “We are thinking that these great icons would also be brought to the mainstream and the Government of Maharashtra has shown great interest in this action”.

“The funds were given in February and we are hoping to get the interest of one year on it so we can start courses, organise national seminars, and bring out books as well as research articles,” she said while talking about the initial steps taken by the university. Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit also pushed for an all-India-level strategic thought for new narratives to develop

The university plans to start with two to three courses, for the initial start and expects to enlarge as it develops into a great programme. She also spoke more on the centre of excellence: “We are thinking of starting optional courses at the masters’ level and maybe PhDs because we need a lot of resources from which we have to collect the archives in Maharashtra and you should note that the Marathas for over 30 years ruled over Delhi, making it all the more important.”
