India Launches 3 AI Centres of Excellence with rs990 Crore Investment
Introduction
Three Centres of Excellence (CoE) in Artificial Intelligence (AI) were announced by the Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, during an event in New Delhi. These 3 AI Centres will focus on Healthcare, Agriculture, and Sustainable Cities. This initiative aims to enhance India's global presence in Artificial Intelligence.
Dharmendra Pradhan referred to these centres as ‘temples of global public good’ and said that these will provide solutions. As he said, these will contribute to the global public policy as solution providers. These centres are expected to operate from FY 2023-24 to FY 2027-28. A total investment of Rs. 990 crore, approved under the Budget Announcement for 2023-24 has been made in the project.
He also assured that these centres will help in India's start-up ecosystem.
He also appreciated PM Narendra Modi's vision of establishing India as an AI hub and acknowledged the efforts of the apex committee led by Sridhar Vembu. As Dharmendra Pradhan said, these centres will help educational institutions, industry partners, and startups collaborate to develop innovative ideas and solutions.
Sanjay Murthy emphasised the importance of interdisciplinary research and collaboration for achieving optimal results. Saumya Gupta, Joint Secretary of the Department of Higher Education, talked about the genesis and development of the AI-CoEs. ‘Make AI in India and Make AI Work for India’, a short film focusing on India's vision of making it an Artificial Intelligence hub, was also showcased during the event.
As a part of the ‘Viksit Bharat’ initiative, the three AI-CoEs will be led by top educational institutions in consortium with industry partners and startups. IIT Delhi and AIIMS New Delhi will be responsible for the AI-CoE for Healthcare, IIT Ropar will lead the Centre on Agriculture, and IIT Kanpur will focus on Sustainable Cities. The initiative seeks to encourage an efficient AI ecosystem, develop advanced applications, and nurture quality human resources in these fields.
