As in past years, the most dominating courses at the 23 Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) are Engineering and Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Civil Engineering. Latest data published by the Joint Admission Board (JAB) in the Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) 2024, more than four lakh students selected Computer Science and Engineering as their preferred field of study.

It has always been one of the most popular demands at IITs. Recent JIC reports show a similar trend. In 2024, a total of 430,238 students applied for this branch, which is about a 12 percent increase from 382,296 last year, 399,642 in 2022, and 386,360 in 2021. The only time it went over 400,000 before this was in 2020.
It has also been this year’s one of the most demanding branches with 3,18,477 students applying it. In 2019, the candidate choice was 2,97,817, which had then suddenly increased to 3,37,115 in 2020, but got a downfall in 2021 when it dropped down to 2,52,906. There was a slight increment in the popularity (2,78,629) in 2022 and 2023 (2,76,384).
It is the most popular branch after the CS with 3,12,631 students selected it in 2024. Before 2024, students selected this engineering branch was three lakhs (3,38,352) occurred only in 2020. In the year 2023, a total of 2,86,966 chose as their career option EE.
The number of students decreased in this branch during the COVID but now there is a drastic increase in this branch. The number of candidates who opted for Civil Engineering, according to the JIC report, was 2,15,651 in 2019, 241096 in 2020, and 1,82,000 in 2021. This year there is a drastic increase in the number of students in this branch with (2,22,027).
IIT Bombay is the most popular IIT in terms of CSE branch with 25,481 choices registered this year and 19,469 students opted for the Mechanical Engineering program.
For the EE branch, IIT Delhi is supposed to be the most liked IIT by students as 21,855 have shown interest in the four-year program at this Indian capital-based IIT as 15,122 candidates expressed interest in the IIT Delhi's Civil Engineering department.
