The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, commonly known as GATE, was first time conducted on 26, February 1983 to select candidates for all PG engineering courses for three semesters at the five IITs in Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, and Madras.
When GATE first launched in 1983, the exam format was relatively straightforward compared to today’s standards. Eligibility criteria have not changed in the last 41 years it was the same as it is today.
Candidates for the engineering stream of the GATE might be people who have a bachelor's degree in engineering or technology or those who are currently in their last year of graduation in one of these fields. On the other hand, individuals who passed the Associate Members of the Institution of Engineers (AMIE) or any other equivalent test approved by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for job purposes could also apply to the engineering stream.
GATE's science stream was open for MSc degree holders in agricultural sciences, chemistry, earth sciences, life sciences, mathematics, materials science, physics, and regional planning, as well as students in the last year of one of these programs.
Presently any undergraduate student can apply for GATE also those who are currently in the third year or higher years and pursuing any government-approved program in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts, or humanities are eligible to apply for GATE 2025.
The paper pattern also changed now GATE paper includes three types of questions which are, multiple choice questions (MCQ), multiple select questions (MSQ), and numerical answer type (NAT). A total of 100 marks of paper is asked with 15 marks for general aptitude. Negative marking for each MCQ’s type question no negative marking for MSQ and NAT.
But, during 1983, at the initial stage, the declaration of results was based on absolute marks but on the percentile, and fractile categorization within each discipline.
Presently from registration to fee payment, all is computerized and online but in 1983 A crossed Indian Postal Order for Rs. 5 was made out to the designated IIT, and a self-addressed, 22 x 32 cm, stamped envelope for Rs. 4.50 needed to be sent with the application form request. The GATE admit cards were sent in the envelopes. The application form has to be submitted with a non-refundable registration fee of Rs 45. Scheduled Tribes (ST) or Scheduled Castes (SC) students are not required to pay the registration fee.
