Students have to wait longer as, due to the absence of government counsel, the Supreme Court has postponed the NEET PG 2024 examination to October 4. Earlier the hearing was to be held on September, 27 but now the schedule of the hearing on October 4, 2024, is expected. The petition was filed by students for last-minute changes in exam format by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) mainly but also demanded transparency in the examination by NBEMS also raised voice for normalization and fairness process.
The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) is responsible for conducting the NEET PG exam and surrounded itself by this legal battle. As the body responsible for conducting the NEET PG 2024 examination pattern, it has faced criticism from both petitioners and aspirants for introducing the last-minute change in the examination process.
Ishika Jain and the other candidates filed a plea asking the court to become active in the rules that the National Board of Education for Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has established. Students have also raised questions about the release of answer keys, question papers, and response sheets. Besides, the student also questioned the normalization process. The main issue raised by students is related to last-minute changes in the examination format which also impact the fairness and transparency of the exam.
According to a report by Indian Express- Student lawyers senior advocate Vibha Datta Makhija and Advocate Tanvi Dubey asked the Supreme Court to question NBEMS over last-minute changes to the exam pattern without any official notice. “There needs to be a standardized approach,” Makhija pointed out that there was no proper schedule for how exams were conducted. “Everything relied on a single information bulletin that the authorities might change at their leisure.
Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud, who headed a three-judge bench, also raised questions about the timing of the change during the initial hearing. Regarding the changes made just three days before the exam, the CJI said, "That is very strange”. The students are going to face problems" The CJI immediately questioned the NBEMS, "How can the body do all this?" as the Bench questioned the organization's decision to make such sudden adjustments. Regarding minimizing the changes, the government lawyer for the NBEMS claimed that nothing out of the box had been done. The court, however, insisted on further investigation because this explanation was insufficient.
