Supreme Court Postpones NEET PG 2024 Case Hearing; Union of India’s Presence Required

Introduction

The Supreme Court of India has postponed the NEET PG 2024 Case Hearing yesterday. The Case Hearing has been postponed to Monday, i.e., 30 September 2024.

The petition was filed on 7 September. It urges the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) to disclose the response sheets, raw scores, pre-normalized scores, normalized results, and answer keys for NEET PG 2024. Many candidates claimed to have received lower ranks than deserved. Many discrepancies in the ranking process created suspicion among the students.

19 petitioners including Ishika Jain, Kiran Kumar Patil, Tanmoy Deshmukh, and 16 other candidates, filed the petition under the diary number 41088/2024.

The hearing was presided over by a bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justice Manoj Misra. The bench acknowledged the receipt of NBEMS' reply but emphasized that the Union of India (UOI) must be represented in the matter, as no one from the UOI appeared for today's hearing. "Let the Union of India appear," the CJI remarked, adding that the presence of an Additional Solicitor General (ASG) would be required on Monday to assist the court.

The NEET PG counselling process is slated to begin at 5 PM today. Despite this, the court opted to adjourn the hearing.

The Supreme Court has issued multiple notices to the NBEMS, the Union of India, to resolve the matter and respond to students’ concerns. Over two lakh aspirants are waiting for clarity on the matter. The hearing on Monday will hopefully bring clarity.
