The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it would hear the special leave petitions which were filed by Telangana on Sept 20 on the increase of tension is among students over getting admissions to MBBS and other medical courses in Telangana, which were raised due to lack of clarity on local candidate norms. Earlier, the Telangana high court had read down certain portions of local candidate definition of the state on September 5, 2024 in its July 19 GO 33 after nearly 150 students raised their voice with the plea that will adversely affect the domiciles and permanent residents of Telangana.
Following the HC verdict, an aggrieved state approached the SC. The state government wants to say that since Hyderabad is no longer a common capital for AP and Telangana from June 2, 2024 and it can now define the local rule in a manner that benefits local candidates better.
The definition of a local candidate can be important because 85% of the seats will go to them and the remaining 15% seats will go to All India quota, and non-local candidates will have to vie for seats under this category.
According to Kiran Kondaparthy who is counsel for students and were petitioners before the HC and are now respondents before the Supreme Court. Though these cases were before a 3-judge bench including Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra, they could not reach the stage of hearing on Tuesday. The state has three senior advocates from the Supreme Court who works to resolve the issue so that the admission process in the state could be completed soon which is already behind neighbouring states.
