On September 24, 2024, the Supreme Court stated that the NRI quota in MBBS admission was a ‘fraud’ and “means of making money” and dismissed the Punjab government’s appeal against a Punjab and Haryana High Court ruling striking down their new rules allowing relatives of Non-Resident Indians( NRI) to be included in the NRI quota. Due to this,1,490 students have converted into Non-Resident Indians to get admission to medical colleges
To secure admission to medicine, candidates have to clear the NEET exam with the required percentage. The NEET counselling refers to the selection of candidates with rthe equired qualifications to allocate seats in medical institutes.
1,490 candidates had converted their categories from Indian to Non-Resident Indian (NRI), thus reflecting an easy way of getting into the medical field.
The Central Medical Counselling Committee (MCC)
allows converting the Indians to NRI under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
NRI Quota secures a reservation for Non-Resident Indians in Indian medical institutes. The candidates who have cleared the NTA NEET competitive exam are eligible.
NRI Quota secures 15 pper centof total seats in private institutions. Some government medical institutions also have NRI Quotas including Rajasthan, Haryana, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, and two Union Territories (UTs), Chandigarh and Pondicherry.
Under the MCC NEET UG counselling, a candidate can avail the benefit of the NRI category through the NRI Sponsor by properly submitting documents that show the sponsor is an NRI and also show the connection between the applicant and sponsor.
