The Indian Government established 60 new medical colleges in 2024, boosting MBBS seats by 6.30%.

The Indian Government has established 60 new medical colleges in 2024, gradually increasing the  MBBS seats by 6.30 per cent in the Medical healthcare sector, thus raising the total to 766  and increasing MBBS by 6.30 per cent to 1,15,812.

India Medical Colleges 

Union Health Minister JP Nadda shared this news on Friday, highlighting the Ministry of Health's achievements within the first 100 days. He stated that the total number of medical colleges in India has gone up from 706 in the year 2023-24 to 766 in 2024-25. 

Growth in postgraduate medical seats

In addition to undergraduate medical seats, the postgraduate medical seats also expanded. The number of PG seats rose by 5.92% this year, reaching an extra 4,087 seats when compared to last year.

According to the reports from the past ten years, PG seats had also doubled, from 31,185 in 2013-14 to the current 73,111 in 2023- 2024, marking a 127% increase in total, leading to more quality in the healthcare sector in the country.

 Progress on AIIMS Darbhanga

Union Health Minister JP Nadda also started updates regarding the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Darbhanga. The Bihar Government granted 150.13 acres of land on August 12, 2024, for the construction of this institution. 

The Union Cabinet approved the establishment of AIIMS Darbhanga On September 15, 2020, with a budget of Rs 1,264 crore, expected to bring affordable and quality healthcare services to the regions of our country.

An Increase in MBBS seats leads to further enhancement in medical education, which facilitates the growth of more Healthcare professionals in the country. In addition, progress on AIIMS Darbhanga is essential to improve access to medical care, ensuring the development of India’s healthcare system.
