The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released updated guidelines for the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum 2024 for MBBS students. Here's a breakdown of the major changes and updates:
Key Updates in Revised Curriculum:
- Removal of “Unnatural Sexual Offences”:
- References to sodomy and lesbianism as “unnatural sexual offences” under forensic medicine have been removed.
- The curriculum now discusses informed consent in sexual intercourse and the decriminalization of consensual adult homosexual behavior.
- Virginity Test Inclusion:
- Faculties are now required to teach that virginity tests are unscientific, inhuman, and discriminatory.
- Students must learn how to inform courts about the unscientific basis of such tests.
- Unchanged NExT and Attendance Guidelines:
- The guidelines for the National Exit Test (NExT) remain unchanged.
- 75% attendance in electives remains mandatory for students to qualify for NExT.
- Teaching Hours Remain Intact:
- There are no changes to the total teaching hours for MBBS students across different subjects.
Topics Covered Under "Sexual Offences" in Forensic Medicine:
- Forced or non-consensual penetrative anal sex.
- Non-consensual oral sex.
- Bestiality and zoophilia.
- Forced or non-consensual touching, groping, and indecent assault.
Exclusion of Disability Competencies:
- The revised curriculum does not restore the disability module, which had been advocated for by medical professionals and disability rights activists.
- Despite this, no obligation to comply with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (2016) or the Transgender Persons Protection Act (2019) has been enforced.
Phased Structure of MBBS:
The MBBS program remains divided into three phases:
- Phase 1 and Phase 2: 12 months each.
- Phase 3: 30 months.
- MBBS students will continue to study 19 subjects across these phases.
