Indian Students Win Gold and Four Silvers at International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics

Introduction 

Team India has done remarkably at the 17th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) which was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on  17 to 25 August 2024. The five-member team from India has won one gold and four silver medals in this competition.

Country wise Performance 

 Daksh Tayalia from Karnataka has won the gold medal, while Aayush Kuthari and Sanidhya Saraf from Maharashtra, Telangana's Banibrata Majee, and Panini from Bihar have secured silver medals. At IOAA 2024, in which 232 students competed, India trailed Iran which won five gold medals, USA, which got three gold, and Romania, South Korea, Singapore, Slovenia, and Canada which won two gold medals each.

The team for this competition was composed of  Prof Bhargav Vaidya of IIT Indore and Pritesh Ranadive of HBCSE-TIFR, Mumbai,  with scientific observers professor Arnab Bhattacharya of HBCSE-TIFR, Mumbai, Dr Vaibhav Pant of ARIES, Nainital, Dr Akshat Singhal of HBCSE-TIFR, Mumbai, and Yash Mehta of Open AI. Professor Aniket Sule of HBCSE-TIFR attended as the current president of IOAA.

At IOAA 2024, in which 232 students competed, India trailed Iran which won five gold medals, USA, which got three gold, and Romania, South Korea, Singapore, Slovenia, and Canada which won two gold medals each.

IOAA Plan for 2025

The IOAA will be hosted in Mumbai in the year 2025 by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), which helps the students prepare for international science and mathematics Olympiads. HBCSE director Professor Arnab Bhattacharya has also received the IOAA flag from the current hosts.

 The Indian team also secured fourth place At the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2024 last month in which 108 countries participated. It was India’s best performance since it began participating in the event in 1989.
