Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced during his Independence Day speech on August 15, 2024, that India will create 75,000 new medical seats in the next five years. This initiative aims to address the current situation where many Indian students, primarily from middle-class families, are forced to pursue medical education abroad, incurring significant costs.
Currently, India has a total of 106,333 MBBS seats, with 55,648 in government colleges and 50,685 in private colleges. The government added 5,150 new seats in 2023. The new medical seats will increase the availability of medical education within India, reducing the financial burden on families and providing more opportunities for aspiring doctors.
In addition to the medical seats, PM Modi highlighted the importance of internships for young professionals. He stated that internships can equip them with valuable experience and make them more competitive in the global job market.
Furthermore, the government has allocated ?1 lakh crore for research and innovation in the budget, aiming to support young Indians in transforming their ideas into practical applications. The National Research Foundation, established by the government, promotes research and innovation in science and technology, fostering a culture of research within universities, colleges, research institutes, and R&D laboratories.
PM Modi also urged one lakh youth from non-political families to join politics. This appeal was directed at addressing the issue of nepotism and casteism within the political system, encouraging fresh perspectives and talent to contribute to the nation's governance.
