Delhi High Court: Conducting NEET UG Twice a Year is a Government Decision
The Delhi High Court has rejected a plea seeking the NEET UG exam to be conducted twice a year, similar to JEE Main. The court ruled that deciding the NEET UG schedule falls under the government’s policy-making authority and is beyond judicial intervention.
NEET UG Twice a Year: High Court’s Verdict
A bench comprising Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela heard the petition filed by a coaching institute teacher, who argued that conducting NEET UG more than once a year would benefit students. The petitioner pointed out that JEE Main is conducted in multiple sessions, allowing candidates to improve their scores while reducing exam pressure.
However, the Delhi High Court clarified that just because JEE Main follows a multiple-attempt system, it does not mean the same should apply to NEET UG. The bench noted that many other competitive exams are held only once a year, and it is a policy decision whether to increase the frequency of NEET UG.
Government’s Role in NEET UG Exam Policy
The court emphasized that the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare are responsible for deciding the NEET UG schedule. If the authorities receive a request regarding NEET UG twice a year, they should consider it and make an appropriate decision based on feasibility and policy requirements.
The court granted the petitioner the liberty to submit a formal representation to the government or the concerned authorities. However, it reiterated that the judiciary cannot intervene in administrative decisions unless a constitutional violation is evident.
Implications for NEET UG Aspirants
The Delhi High Court’s ruling means that NEET UG 2025 will continue to be held once a year unless the government decides otherwise. While multiple attempts could help students reduce stress and improve scores, such a change would require policy modifications from the authorities.
As of now, aspirants preparing for NEET UG 2025 should focus on a single-attempt strategy and keep track of any updates from the NTA or the Ministry of Education regarding future changes to the NEET UG format.
