The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced that the NEET UG 2025 exam will be held in pen-and-paper (OMR-based) mode, in a single day and single shift. This announcement comes a day after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a case against eight individuals for their involvement in impersonation during the NEET UG 2024 exam.
In its latest notification, the NTA confirmed that the NEET UG 2025 will follow the traditional exam pattern as decided by the National Medical Commission (NMC). The exam will be conducted in offline mode on a single day, and in a single shift, as in previous years. This decision aligns with the NMC's directives, despite earlier calls for reforms to the exam format.
The CBI’s case centers around allegations of impersonation involving four candidates during the NEET UG 2024 exam, which took place on May 5 last year. The candidates in question appeared for the exam at the SRDAV Public School in Purnia, Bihar. According to the FIR, biometric data indicated that four impersonators had taken the exam in place of the registered candidates.
The individuals accused of impersonating include:
All eight individuals involved, including the impersonators and the original candidates, have been charged with cheating, forgery, and other criminal offenses.
Despite widespread suggestions for reform, including proposals for multiple shifts, age limits, and a cap on attempts, the NTA has decided to maintain the current NEET UG exam pattern for 2025. A high-level committee, led by former ISRO chairman K Radhakrishnan, had recommended changes in its report submitted in December 2024. However, the NTA has opted not to implement those changes for the upcoming exam.
The NEET exam, conducted by the NTA, is used for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other medical courses in both government and private institutions. Last year, over 23 lakh candidates appeared for the exam at more than 4,750 centers across 571 cities, including international centers.
As NEET-UG 2025 approaches, students are advised to focus on high-weightage topics, particularly in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Resources such as previous years’ question papers (NEET PYQs) and guides on scoring concepts are essential for focused preparation. Students can find detailed study materials and expert advice to boost their scores in the upcoming exam.
