JEE Advanced Attempt Case: Supreme Court to Hear Plea Tomorrow

On January 6, 2025, the Supreme Court will consider a crucial appeal about the requirements for taking the Joint Entrance Examination Advanced (JEE Advanced). 22 applicants submitted the appeal, which challenges the Joint Admission Board's (JAB) recent decision to reduce the number of JEE Advanced attempts permitted from three to two.

JAB Reverses JEE Attempt Limit Amid Controversy

The JAB first raised the JEE Advanced attempt limit to three in November 2024, giving applicants one more chance to be eligible for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). But a few weeks later, on November 15, the board brought back the previous two-attempt rule, citing "competing requirements".

Many candidates have been discouraged by this reversal, particularly those who had modified their plans in response to the previous news. Uncertainty now surrounds applicants who dropped out of engineering programs or put their academic careers on hold to take the JEE Advanced exam for the third time.

Candidates Challenge JAB Decision

The petitioners argue that their academic futures are at risk and that the sudden policy change has interfered with their preparation. To restore the three-attempt rule for JEE Advanced 2025, they are requesting the Supreme Court's intervention.

Discussions over consistency and fairness in examination policies have been rekindled by the case. Applicants who took the JEE Advanced exam in 2023 and 2024 intended to use the extra try to raise their scores. Those aspirations have been crushed as the limit has been lowered.

JEE Advanced Exam Details and Eligibility

Other requirements for JEE Advanced 2025 eligibility are unaffected by the controversy:

Candidates must place in the top 2,50,000 and be eligible for JEE Main.

Class 12 must have been completed in 2024 or 2025.

Candidates in the general category must have been born on or after October 1, 2000, although SC, ST, and PwD candidates are exempt from this requirement for five years.

The date of IIT Kanpur's JEE Advanced 2025 is set for May 18, 2025.

Since first-time applicants must now be admitted within two tries, the policy change has increased competition and preparation pressure. Concerns have been raised by both educators and students regarding the decision's long-term effects on exam accessibility and fairness.

Thousands more candidates waiting for a resolution to this controversial matter may find clarity and guidance in the Supreme Court's decision tomorrow.
