Student visa updates for UK and US

United Kingdom

The UK has introduced many restrictions on dependents postgraduate students which are causing concern among prospective applicants. The Graduate Visa program remains in place by allowing students to work for two years post-graduation, with Doctorate holders by receiving extended benefits.

United States (US):

Stricter visa regulations and higher rejection rates have made the US a more challenging destination for international students. While STEM graduates can utilize the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program to work for up to three years after completing their studies, long-term immigration pathways remain complex and uncertain.

Canada:

Canada's previously welcoming stance is shifting with stricter immigration norms, capped permits, and new language requirements which is leading to a decline in applications. Despite these challenges, Canada continues to offer extended post-study work rights in priority fields, maintaining its appeal to some international students rules.

Australia:

Australia plans to cap international student enrollments at 270,000 starting in 2025, reducing the intake by a third from 2023 figures. This measure aims to control immigration and ease housing pressures but increases competition for spots. Additionally, new visa regulations effective July 1 require individuals on visitor or temporary graduate visas to leave Australia to apply for a student visa, preventing "visa hopping."

Germany:

Germany is becoming increasingly popular among all the  international students due to relaxed language requirements and straightforward post-study work options. The country has  planned to issue 90,000 visas annually to skilled workers, emphasizing practical work opportunities alongside quality education.

Italy:

There are increased visa requirements in Italy which have raised concerns about deterring international students. Stakeholders have warned that these strict rules and regulations could affect the country's attractiveness as a study destination.

These evolving visa policies necessitate that prospective international students carefully evaluate their options by  considering not only academic offerings but also work and immigration opportunities in their chosen study destinations.
