Delhi University to Launch PhD in Hindu Studies from 2025-26 Academic Session

Delhi University (DU) is planning to launch a PhD program in Hindu Studies starting in the 2025-26 academic year, as per a proposal from its Standing Committee. The recommendation to introduce the program was made by the Governing Body of the Centre for Hindu Studies. Although it was initially planned for the current academic session, the launch was postponed.

The initiative aims to provide students with more research opportunities, said Prerna Malhotra, Joint Director of the Centre for Hindu Studies. "Our Governing Board has suggested starting a PhD in Hindu Studies, and the proposal will be presented to the Academic Council. Many students, including those with JRF and NET qualifications in Hindu Studies, have shown interest in pursuing research. Delhi University is committed to supporting these students and promoting research in this field," Malhotra told PTI.

Current Offerings and Background

DU currently offers a two-year Master’s program in Hindu Studies, which began in November 2023. The Centre for Hindu Studies program, established in 2023, primarily focuses on Brahmanical texts and has been working to expand its academic offerings.

The introduction of this PhD program is seen as a significant step to enhance research opportunities and attract more students to the field of Hindu Studies.
