Student Loan Forgiveness: Eligibility and Latest Updates Explained

Student loan forgiveness programs in the United States with a motive to lessen the financial burden on borrowers by canceling a portion of their student loans. Eligibility for these programs depends on various factors like the employment sector, repayment plan, and specific circumstances.

Eligibility Criteria:

Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF): Borrowers employed full-time by government or  non-profit organizations which may qualify for PSLF after giving 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan. Eligible employment cover in it are roles in public education, law enforcement and public health. 

Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) Plan Forgiveness: According to this plan, Borrowers are enrolled in IDR plans, in which monthly payments are set on the basis of income and family size and may be eligible for loan forgiveness after 20 or 25 years of qualifying payments which depends on the specific plan. 

Teacher Loan Forgiveness: Under this plan, Teachers serving in low-income schools or educational agencies for five consecutive years are eligible for forgiveness of up to $17,500 on certain federal student loans.

The Biden administration has implemented several measures to provide student debt relief on December 2024 like:

Withdrawal of Mass Cancellation Plans: The administration has withdrawn proposals for the student debt cancellation by following legal challenges and operational concerns. Efforts are now being given on assisting at-risk borrowers as they resume repayments. 

Public Service Workers: According to this, An addition of $4.28 billion has been approved in student debt for nearly 55,000 public service workers which bringsthe total relief to approximately $180 billion for nearly 5 million Americans. 

Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) Plans: The Saving on a Valuable Education Plan has replaced the REPAYE Plan which provides borrowers lower monthly payments by reducing the overall repayment burden.
