The government on Monday urged Members of Parliament to help spread awareness about 21 fake universities operating across the country and warn students against enrolling in them. During Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar shared that the central government has asked state and Union Territory administrations to take legal steps to shut down these institutions
"I appeal to MPs, who are active on social media and have a large following among students, to share the list of fake universities online. This will help prevent students from being misled by such fraudulent claims," Majumdar said. He also told that state governments have been instructed to take necessary action on those who are running these fake universities and misusing the title "university" and awarding counterfeit degrees.
Majumdar explained that directly intervening could raise federalism concerns. He added that 12 fake universities were shut down between 2014 and 2024. The government has also requested state and UT officials to inform the UGC or the central government about any additional fake universities operating in their areas that the UGC does not yet list.
FIRs have been filed against several unauthorized institutions, and warning notices have been issued to those offering invalid degrees.
