The Supreme Court of India once again delayed the hearing on a petition seeking greater transparency in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Postgraduate (NEET-PG) 2024. An earlier hearing was scheduled on December 10, 2024, but now it will be conducted on January 7, 2025
This marks the seventh time the hearing has been postponed since the petition was filed in September 2024, as per reports from Medical Dialogues. The petition was brought by 19 NEET-PG candidates who raised concerns about sudden changes to the exam format and the lack of transparency in result processing. They demanded that the National Board of Examinations (NBE) release question papers, answer keys, and candidates' response sheets for the exam.
The hearing, originally planned for September 30, 2024, was first delayed because no representative from the Central Government was present. Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud urged additional Solicitor Generals (ASGs) to attend the next scheduled hearing on October 4, 2024. However, the case was postponed again to October 25 due to the Union of India failing to submit a detailed response. While the NBE submitted its required documents, further delays continued.
A Supreme Court bench led by Justices BR Gavai and MV Viswanathan moved the most recent hearing date, December 10, 2024, to January 7, 2025.
The petitioners also mentioned that last-minute changes in exam patterns caused students unnecessary stress and confusion. They also question the fairness and transparency of the result announcement. They also asked for transparency in many things:
This ongoing delay increases anxiety day by day in students and also affects their future studies.
