From 2025, the CUET-UG will switch back to a fully computer-based test (CBT), and students can choose any subject to appear for, regardless of what they studied in class 12, said UGC Chairman Jagadesh Kumar.
In an interview, Kumar explained thata panel of experts reviewed the exam’s structure and recommended several changes, which the UGC has approved. The review focused on aspects like the number of papers, duration, syllabus alignment, and logistics.
The major updates include conducting the exam only in CBT mode, as it is more secure and reliable compared to other formats. Now students can pick subjects outside their class 12 stream, encouraging flexibility in higher education choices.
The number of test papers has been reduced from 63 to 37. For subjects no longer offered, such as Entrepreneurship and Legal Studies, admissions will rely on the General Aptitude Test (GAT). Also, the language test was reduced from 33 to 13 which covers options like English, Hindi, and Tamil. Domain-specific subjects have also been trimmed from 29 to 23
Students appearing in 2025 can take up to five subjects, down from the previous six. Exam durations have been standardized to 60 minutes across all subjects, eliminating the earlier range of 45-60 minutes. Optional questions have been removed, making all questions compulsory to ensure consistency in difficulty levels
For CUET-PG, the test duration will be shortened from 105 minutes to 90 minutes.
Kumar acknowledged that earlier editions of CUET-UG faced many challenges like:
He emphasized that the UGC is learning from past experiences to refine the CUET-UG and make it more student-friendly each year.
