Union Cabinet Approves 85 New KVs, 28 JNVs, and KV Shivamogga Expansion

Introduction

The Union Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister has approved the opening of 28 new Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNVs) in uncovered districts and 85 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) under the civil and defence sectors. The expansion of KV Shivamogga in Karnataka has also been approved by adding two additional sections in all the classes under the Kendriya Vidyalaya scheme. KV Shivamogga and the other 85 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) will together accommodate 82,560 students.

“The administrative structure for implementing the project will require the creation of posts at par with the norms fixed by the Sangathan for running one full-fledged KV with a capacity of approximately 960 students,” the official press release read.

JNVs are residential and co-educational schools. These schools offer modern education from Class VI to XII and cater mainly to talented children from rural areas, belonging to different socio-economic backgrounds. A selection test is conducted for admissions and about 49,640 students are admitted to Class VI every year. The official press release reads, “In recent years, Navodaya Vidyalayas have witnessed increasing enrolment of girls (42%), as well as SC (24%), ST (20%) and OBC (39%) children, thereby ensuring that quality education is accessible to all.”
