CBSE Plans Two Levels of Science and Social Science for Class 9 and 10 Students

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is planning to introduce two levels—standard and advanced—for science and social science in classes 9 and 10. This change has been confirmed by an official. Currently, CBSE offers two levels only for mathematics in class 10.

The CBSE’s curriculum committee has accepted the concept of ??introducing two levels of science and social science. This idea is also aligned with the new National Education Policy (NEP). But, the given idea has not been approved by the CBSE’s governing body till now. According to the NEP, all subjects will be offered at two levels. According to the NEP, all subjects will be offered at two levels. This will enable students to select subjects at the standard level and others at the advanced level.

“The curriculum committee has approved the proposal, but the details and structure still need to be finalized,” said a senior CBSE official. They explained that, like mathematics, where both levels follow the same syllabus but have different exam papers and difficulty levels, science and social science could adopt a similar system.

The official also shared the goal behind this move: “The idea is to let students who excel in these subjects study them in more depth before choosing them in class 11.”

Sources say the board hasn’t set a timeline yet, as new NCERT textbooks based on the updated curriculum are still being developed. Decisions about scheduling two rounds of board exams, as recommended by the New Curriculum Framework (NCF), are also pending.
