NMC Issues Advisory for MBBS Abroad Aspirants: Criteria for Practicing in India

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a crucial advisory for Indian students aspiring to pursue MBBS abroad, emphasizing compliance with the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiates (FMGL) Regulations, 2021. The advisory highlights the minimum eligibility criteria and warns against enrolling in institutions that fail to meet the prescribed standards.

Key Guidelines and Requirements

  1. Course Duration: A minimum of 54 months of medical education and an additional 12 months of internship at the same foreign institution are mandatory for registration in India.
  2. Medium of Instruction: The MBBS course must be conducted in English or as per FMGL norms.
  3. Syllabus Compliance: The curriculum must align with the guidelines outlined by the NMC, ensuring comparable academic standards to Indian medical institutions.
  4. Clinical Training and Internship: Comprehensive clinical training and an internship program must be completed at the foreign medical institution where the student is enrolled.
  5. Recognition of Institution: The medical university must be officially recognized and licensed by the country’s regulatory body.
  6. Exit Test: Graduates must pass the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) or its equivalent for permanent registration in India.

NMC's Caution

The advisory sternly states that any deviation from these conditions—whether in course duration, clinical training, or medium of instruction—will disqualify students from obtaining registration to practice in India. The notice reads, “In case of disqualification, the sole responsibility shall lie upon the candidate only.”

Student Responsibility

Aspiring candidates are urged to thoroughly verify the compliance of their chosen foreign institutions with FMGL Regulations before admission. The advisory ensures that students are fully aware of the implications of enrolling in substandard or unrecognized programs.

The NMC’s advisory aims to safeguard Indian students from academic and professional hurdles post-graduation. It reinforces the need for quality education and adherence to regulatory guidelines for practicing medicine in India.
