PMKVY Scheme Empowers Women: 40% Leadership in Skill India Courses

The Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), launched in 2015 is a skill development program. It has trained over 1.5 crore people, with women making up 40% of the trainees, according to the minister for skill development, Jayant Chaudhary.

The electronics and hardware sector leads India’s skill development efforts under PMKVY, training over 15 lakh students. The apparel sector is next, with over 13 lakh candidates trained nationwide.

In the current version of PMKVY, the IT-ITes sector has trained 2,04,703 candidates. By comparison, in PMKVY 2.0, the same sector trained 3,45,303 candidates. However, some sectors, like paints and coating and domestic workers training, have seen no enrollments in the current phase. Until PMKVY 3.0, 10,273 candidates were placed in the domestic worker category.

Uttar Pradesh leads in skill training across all PMKVY phases, benefiting from its large population and diverse economy. Under PMKVY 2.0, the state trained over 15 lakh candidates, which decreased to 82,000 in PMKVY 3.0. In the current version, Uttar Pradesh has trained 3,88,996 candidates.

Maharashtra ranks second, with 11,95,605 total trained candidates. Delhi, however, shows a sharp drop in enrollments. In PMKVY 2.0, Delhi trained 3,77,441 candidates, but this fell to 19,362 in PMKVY 3.0 and further to 17,710 in the current phase.
