Cabinet Greenlights ‘One Nation, One Subscription’ Initiative

The Indian Union Cabinet which is led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the One Nation, One Subscription initiative to democratize access to scholarship for researching articles and journals across the country. the initiative will provide centralized, open access to national and international research resources for students, faculty, and researchers in over 6,300 government-funded institutions, including universities and R&D centers with a budget of ?6,000 crore for three years from the year 2025 to 2027.

The scheme will be implemented digitally through the Information and Library Network which is an autonomous University Grants Commission body. Its main objective is to eliminate the redundancy of multiple institutional subscriptions by ensuring equitable access to academic resources for example for Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. By including journals from leading publishers, the initiative works to foster interdisciplinary research, enhance innovation and support the goals outlined in the National Education Policy 2020 and the Anusandhan National Research Foundation.

ONOS is expected to serve nearly 1.8 crore users which includes students and scientists, and bolster India’s efforts to become a global knowledge hub. To maximize usage, the government will be conducting awareness campaigns in educational and research institutions. State governments will also be involved in promoting the initiative within their jurisdictions.

This landmark will strengthen India’s research ecosystem by aligning with the broader vision of empowering youth and advancing national innovation goals.
