The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) released new guidelines on leave for trainees in its Postgraduate (PG) medical programs. Announced on November 22, 2024, the main aim of these rules is to make leave allowances uniform and ensure that trainees finish their training within the set time limits.
Under the new rules, trainees are allowed up to 30 days of leave per year. This 30-day limit includes weekly days off or other duty-free days. For female trainees, maternity leave is granted according to state or central government guidelines, while male trainees can take up to two weeks of paternity leave. If trainees take more than the allowed 30 days, their training period will be extended, and if this extension goes beyond the set deadlines, it could affect their eligibility to take final exams.
Trainees need to submit leave requests through the NBEMS portal with the required paperwork. Leave requests made after the absence will not be accepted. If trainees exceed the allowed leave, their training will be extended, but the total time off during training can't go over one year. Violating these rules may result in disciplinary action, including losing the chance to continue the program.
Completing the program depends on adhering to the leave restrictions. Trainees who violate the restrictions risk losing their place in the program, and those who take more time off than is permitted may not be allowed to take final exams.
