Study Abroad Report: India Surpasses China with 3.31 Lakh Students Opting for STEM in USA

India once ranked top for the international students in the United States for the 2023-24 academic year, earlier it topped in  2019, according to The Open Doors 2024 Report.

U.S. universities now host over 1.1 million international students. China remains a leading source of students despite a 4% drop to 277,398. China leads in undergraduate enrollments with 87,551 students and non-degree courses with 5,517.

Foreign graduates, OPT participants

The number of graduates from all countries in the U.S. hit a new record of over 502,000, an 8% rise. OPT participation also rose with  242,782 students, up 22%. Although undergraduate enrollments saw a slight 1% decline, the enrollment of new international students remained steady at 298,705.

Allan Goodman, CEO of the Institute of International Education said “As we celebrate 75 years of Open Doors, we are happy to announce the record number of international students in the US this year.”
