Delhi Air Pollution: DU, JNU Shift to Online Classes Amid Worsening Air Quality

Introduction

Delhi University has announced to shift to online classes till November 23 and the Jawaharlal Nehru University till November 22, 2024 because of worsening air quality levels in the city. The air quality in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) has reached  "alarmingly high" levels. Delhi's AQI was 494 at 4 pm,

In a notification Delhi University said that regular classes in "physical mode" will commence on November 25, 2024. The Delhi government has said this to be a "medical emergency" and urged all the institutions to take preventive measures in the interest of public health.

The primary factors which are responsible for contributing to the hazardous air quality in Delhi are poor weather conditions and widespread stubble burning in neighbouring states. These environmental issues have combined to create a serious public health emergency which are  leading to schools, universities, and offices in Delhi-NCR adopting measures like shifting to online modes of education and work. The poor air quality results to serious health risks, especially for vulnerable groups which includes children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions. According to experts, a combination of vehicular emissions, industrial pollutants, and farmers burning stubble has make the situation more serious.

Several schools and colleges in the region have already started shifting to online classes due to the poor air quality.
