IIT Delhi Surpasses IIT Bombay as India’s Top University in Latest Rankings

IIT-Delhi has ranked at the top spot among Indian universities in the 2025 QS Asia University Rankings. It ranked  44th in Asia, rising two places from last year, remarkable IIT-Bombay, which dropped to 48th, eight places down from the previous year. A total of six Indian universities made it to Asia's top 100.

IIT-Delhi's improved ranking is due to factors like:

"We're focusing a lot on technology, startups, and finding solutions to social problems," said Professor Vivek Buwa, head of IIT-Delhi's ranking team and dean of planning.

One key reason for IIT-Delhi's success is its high score in ‘citations per paper,’ which measures the impact of research through the average number of citations each paper gets. The institute also scored 95 out of 100 in ‘papers per faculty,’ with about 640 faculty members producing an average of seven publications each year.

"We work with local and international companies, as well as government labs in India," said Buwa. Under the Institutions of Eminence initiative, over Rs 200 crore was spent on advanced research facilities. Additional funds from the institute's resources have boosted the quality and quantity of research.

For the ‘academic reputation’ category, IIT-Delhi scored 75.4 out of 100, showing good results in various areas. The institute also performed well in 'employment reputation,' scoring 99 out of 100 among Asian universities. "We have a dedicated team bringing in top global companies to collaborate with us, and our alumni network plays a key role in strengthening our reputation. We also scored 95 in 'employer reputation,' highlighting our strong global image," Buwa explained.

IIT-Delhi is focused on growing its international profile by seeking input from academics worldwide. "Our Abu Dhabi campus is part of this global strategy. In January, we launched a master's program there, and in September, two new undergraduate courses began, both receiving positive feedback," said the dean of planning. In the ‘international research’ category, IIT-Delhi scored 89 out of 100, indicating strong partnerships with global institutions. Currently, the institute is involved in nearly 116 research projects with universities around the world
