ISRO-IIT Madras MoU: New Centre of Excellence in Fluid and Thermal Sciences
Good news for all technical students as IIT Madras will now offer students a chance to study how to manage heat in spacecraft and launch vehicles, thanks to a partnership with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). ISRO has given IIT-Madras funding of ?1.84 crore to set up a special center focused on fluid and thermal sciences.
Key Highlights of the Programme
Here are some key points that will explain more about the IIT initiative:
- Background: The collaboration between IIT-M and ISRO is very old. They set up the ISRO-IIT-M Space Technology Cell together in 1985.
- New Centre’s Role: This new center will be a key place where IIT-M faculty can help solve complex issues in spacecraft design and thermal management by using their technical expertise.
- Funding: ISRO’s financial support will help IIT-M build the infrastructure needed for this research and purchase equipment and supplies for ongoing projects.
Research Focus
The center is going to work on advanced areas like:
- Managing heat in spacecraft
- Studying combustion issues in hybrid rockets
- Review cooling and thermodynamics in cryogenic (very low temperature) fuel tanks
Official Collaboration
On Monday, Manu Santhanam, Dean of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research at IIT-M, and Victor Joseph T., Director of the Directorate of Technology Development and Innovation at ISRO, signed an agreement (MoU) to establish this center.
Impact and Goals
Professor Arvind Parramatta from IIT-M’s mechanical engineering department explained that the new center is going for both ISRO scientists and IIT-M researchers to make important contributions to India’s space program, enhancing the country’s self-reliance in space technology.
