About IIT Kharagpur:

The first Indian Institute of Technology was founded in May 1950 in Hijli, Kharagpur, in the eastern region of India, keeping the suggestions mentioned earlier by the Sarkar committee in mind. The IIT first began operations at 5, Esplanade East in Calcutta but quickly relocated to Hijli in September 1950. Before Maulana Abul Kalam Azad formally inaugurated the Institute on August 18, 1951, the current name, "Indian Institute of Technology," was chosen. IIT Kharagpur began its existence in the former Hijli Detention Camp, where some of our nation's greatest freedom warriors worked and gave their lives in defense of our nation's independence. Thus, the history of the Hijli Detention Camp and IIT Kharagpur are closely related to one another.
