Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences, Hubballi, was established in August 1957. It is a government-aided institution committed to Medical Education. The present Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences was previously known as Karnataka Medical College. Initially KIMS functioned as a Medical College under the jurisdiction of University of Mysore before the formation of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, in the year 1996. Consequently, KIMS was affiliated.
It is approved by NMC and thus, it offers a varied range of undergraduate, postgraduate, paramedical and super specialty courses. The campus of KIMS is entirely equipped with the latest technology, infrastructure, technologically-advanced classrooms, state-of-the-art laboratories. Moreover, the campus is also endowed with fully furnished hostel facilities, separately for both boys and girls. KIMS aims to help students excel at their preferred field of study, keeping their well-being as the primary goal. Moreover, the teaching faculty comprises excellent and experienced professors.

Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences offers internship programs and clinical exposure as part of their medical education. The internship lasts for one year after the completion of the MBBS course which spans within a time period of four and a half years. Interns rotate across various departments within the affiliated hospitals, thereby, gaining practical experience in varied specialties. Students are trained at several hospitals, such as, KIMS Hospital and Research Center, National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences. KIMS introduces clinical exposure to students in the very first year which helps them in gaining early experiences and integrate theoretical knowledge with their understanding of medical concepts, in real life.

KIMS Hospital is equipped with approximately 675 beds, providing sufficient capacity for patient treatment.
