10 Essential Points to Understand the IIM Selection Process

Indian Institute of Management ( IIM) is one of the top institutes for management education and research. There are 21 IIMS run by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. These IIMs offer postgraduate, diploma, and executive programmes. Admission to the  IIMS is only through the CAT exam ( Common Entrance Test).

For a better understanding of IIM admission, here we have listed out 10 points that will give an overview of the selection process.

1. The first step towards getting into the IIMs is taking the CAT exam. After the declaration of CAT 2024 results, each IIM will send interview letters to the shortlisted candidates through the mail.

2. IIM will shortlist candidates based on CAT score percentile, interview performance, academic history, academic diversity, gender diversity work experience, and academic diversity.

3. The CAT Exam 2024 is categorised into three sections: verbal ability and Reading comprehension, Data interpretation and logical reasoning, and quantitative aptitude test. The time duration will be 120 minutes with each section having 40 minutes, respectively. The test will be conducted in online mode in three slots, so plan and study accordingly.

4. The cut-off score for each section varies and it also varies for the category of the candidate. Here is the overview of the minimum percentile for IIM admission:

Category Verbal ability and Reading comprehension rank Data interpretation and logical reasoning rank Quantitative aptitude rank

5. Although CAT is the main component for IIM admission, other factors such as interview performance of group discussion, written Ability Test and Personal Interview (PI), and their educational qualification is taken into account. This factor and CAT cut-off score varies for different IIM institutes.

6. When candidates are shortlisted for the interview by an IIM, students should have all required documents for document verification.

7. At the time of the interview, students should show their educational qualifications certificates, such as their class 10 and 12 mark sheets, and graduation mark sheets. When joining the program, students should produce their original documents. Candidates should also produce their caste certificate, income certificate, and domicile certificate with a photocopy.

8. Candidates appearing for the final year of a bachelor’s degree must produce the original certificate from the Principal/Registrar/Director of the University/Institution certifying that the Candidates have passed and obtained 50 Percent. For SC, ST, and PwD category students, 45 percent certification is also eligible.

9. As per the official website, candidates who submit a certificate from the Principal/Registrar of their University/Institution issued before the date stipulated by the respective IIM, indicating they have completed all the requirements for obtaining the Bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification, will be allowed to join the course provisionally.

10. Cancellation of documents leads to cancellation of provisional admission. Financial aid is also provided by the IIMs institutes with the help of your income certificate.
