JEE Main 2025: Should I try appearing for the third time?

Numerous exams take place every year in the country. Some are hard while some are believed to be slightly easier. Passing these exams with good scores is every student's dream. After all, these exams determine a student's career trajectory.

The Joint Entrance Exam is one such exam that every engineering student aims to crack. Every year there is massive competition among engineering students in the country. Most of them take drop years to prepare for this one exam. Not every student succeeds. You can always give it another shot. Have you already appeared for this exam twice and somehow not been able to make it? In that case, you too must be thinking about taking another gap year and writing the JEE Main once more. But is the third try worth dropping another crucial year? Let's find out.

The JEE Main is one of the toughest exams in the field of engineering in the world. It requires in-depth knowledge and research of subjects like Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Apart from that, your problem-solving skills, analytical thinking and time-management abilities are also tested. It is the only way to get into India's top engineering institutions, popularly known as IITs or NITs. The competition level is very high and the syllabus too, is extreme. Therefore, utmost dedication and hard work are prerequisites to crack this one.

The JEE Main 2025 will take place in two sessions; the first in January 2025 and the second one in April 2025. Registration for the same will start in November 2024. The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

Deciding to appear in the JEE Main for the third time depends on various factors. Make sure you consider all of them before finalizing your decision.

The JEE Main is not a piece of cake. It is extremely hard to crack it, indeed. Are your goals realistic or are you just dreaming with completely unrealistic goals?  Before you decide to write it for the third time, evaluate your level of preparation. Are you ready for it? If yes, then go for it!

Is your aim to get into an IIT or NIT? In that case, you should give this exam another try. But if you think your college choice will hardly determine your future, then probably shouldn't be going for it as it will require intense commitment and investment of your precious time.

As you have already written the exam twice before, you must be aware of how it works. Assess your previous performance in the exams and past experiences related to JEE. Try connecting the dots, find out where you lacked and what changes could be made this time.

Giving it another try can be a golden opportunity to improve your scores. If you're confident enough that this time you'll be able to make your scores better, we are no one to stop you.

Exams can overburden your mind and can be stressful at times. Consider your mental peace for once. Do not get so driven that you lose your mental and overall stability. Make sure you are stable; mentally, physically, and emotionally.

Pros

College

If you manage to qualify for the exam this time, there's a high chance of you getting into an IIT or NIT. You should always grab such an opportunity.

As you have written the exam before, you are familiar the types of questions, concepts, and topics that usually arise in the question paper. Use all that experience to prepare better and even more enthusiastically.

Not trying it for the last time might make you regret it later. So it's better to take a chance and try your luck out. If nothing, at least you'll be satisfied at a personal level.

Cons

The investment in resources used to prepare is substantial. It may lead to financial overburdening as you’ll require all those books, lectures, sample test papers, assignments etc. to prepare.

An exam like JEE Main requires a lot of effort and time.

If you write the JEE Main for the third time, there's a chance you'll be ineligible for JEE Advance.  There are certain criteria for that. In case you have taken the JEE Advance twice before, you will not be able to attempt it again. Plus your performance in the JEE Main too, determines your eligibility for taking the JEE Advance.

Have you ever thought that the resources you're using for the preparation could be used in some other field? Or that your talent, skills, and potential could be diverted to some other career. Going for an IIT could be an unsuitable career choice for you. Try thinking about it.
