Strategies for Successful Learning

The world today is moving too fast and has become highly competitive. In a world like this, it becomes important to keep up with your studies. This can only be achieved by following a strategy. A strategy plays a crucial role when it comes to studies. Most of us would find it challenging to first make a strategy and then follow it religiously. But as we know, nothing comes without a cost.

It is quite exhausting to keep running this race of studying. Kids can even get frustrated considering the amount of syllabus they have to cover. It becomes a lot more convenient when you have some tricks up your sleeves. These habits are what set toppers apart from the rest of the students. Here are some secrets that toppers would rather keep to themselves and never share with anyone.

Segregation

Segregating chapters and topics subject-wise can be an effective way to manage your studies. Divide a chapter into topics for an organized learning experience.

Time-table

A timetable is often underestimated by most of the students. A lot of kids never even try to form one thinking it won’t help. But that's not true. It might take some time for you to get used to it but once you become habitual, nothing can stop you.

Mnemonics

We all have used mnemonics to remember dates, names, formulas, and those periodic table elements at some point. Aren't these amazing? Using mnemonics can prove to be extremely beneficial for better learning. It can include acronyms, abbreviations, rhymes, linking something to another, mind maps etc.

Repetition

Revision of the previous topics is even more important than covering new ones. No wonder why our teachers always emphasize revising. When we repeat what we've learned, our brain stores it and can recall it when required.

Writing it down

Students generally don't write what they study. While you read a chapter, make sure you note down important points and write them as many times as possible. This increases your recalling capacity. Your mind remembers the visuals of words that you write down.

Visualise

Many students just cram and try to put information inside their brains. Your brain is a living mechanism, not a computer system. If you keep downloading data into your brain, it will surely crash at some point. That is not how it works. Make sure whatever you read, visualize it and try to connect it with the real world.

Take Breaks

Again, if you keep using your brain like a computer system, it is bound to freeze at some point. It is essential to give it breaks at regular intervals. Divide your time into short segments. Take your time and engage yourself in something other than studying. It could be any activity you like. For example, listening to music, playing a sport, going out for a walk, having a conversation with family and friends, cooking, gardening, or just simply sitting idle. This break should not be more than 10-15 minutes as you have to get back to studying.

Explain

Once you're done with a topic or a lesson, explain it to one of your friends. This has proven to be one of the best study techniques. In case, a friend is not available, pretend you're explaining it to someone, could be a pillow or a wall in your room. Speak loudly, it aids in memory recall and retention.

Seek help

You may get stuck at some point while studying. Maybe a sentence or a word that you don't understand, a concept that you can't wrap your head around. Don't hesitate to reach out to a tutor or even a fellow student. Clear your doubts on the spot, don't pile them up.

Find the right time

Are you an early bird or a night owl? Some students find it easier to study at night while others prefer studying in the morning. Try and see what suits you best. Our body clocks work differently which is why our preferred tune to study can vary.

Eat right

Eating healthy and light food enables the body to be more productive. All the energy that goes into digesting heavy foods is conserved and can now be channeled into your studying process.

Stay hydrated

70% of our body is water. It requires water at regular intervals to function properly. Staying hydrated helps your mind and body work better.

Breathe!

Include breathing exercises in your daily routine. Don't take much stress. Whenever it feels like things are not going your way, breathe! Stay focused and remember your goals. Everything will be alright.

As students, sometimes it becomes really hard to balance your academic workload. Attending daily lectures, making notes, revision, homework, and whatnot. We guarantee if you follow these strategies diligently, you'll never face an issue with your studies. You'll start enjoying the process. Go for it!
