MAT Syllabus 2024

The Management Aptitude Test (MAT) is one of the most popular MBA entrance exams in India. It is held four times a year:- February, May, September, and December. 

The MAT 2024 exam pattern remains consistent with previous years, comprising five sections that test candidates on various aspects of their aptitude. The MAT (Management Aptitude Test) can be taken as paper-based or as computer-based depending on its accessibility. It has been conducted by the All India Management Association (AIMA)  since 1988 and is accepted by more than 800+ business schools in India. The level of the exam can be categorized as easy to moderate. It is not as difficult compared to other exams such as CAT. 

The MAT exam evaluates candidates across five sections:

• Language Comprehension
• Intelligence and Critical Reasoning
• Mathematical Skills
• Data Analysis and Sufficiency
• Indian and Global Environment

1. MAT Syllabus for Language Comprehension

The Language Comprehension section evaluates a candidate's ability in English, focusing on their proficiency to comprehend and interpret written content. This section is designed to assess vocabulary and grammar.

Topics:

• Reading Comprehension: Passages from diverse genres such as business, economics, politics, literature, and social issues. Questions test comprehension, inference, and the ability to examine arguments.
• Vocabulary: Synonyms, antonyms, one-word substitution, idioms and phrases, word usage, and sentence completion.
• Grammar: Error detection, sentence correction, parts of speech, active and passive voice, direct and indirect speech, and usage of articles, prepositions, conjunctions, etc.
• Verbal Reasoning: Analogies, odd one out, and contextual usage of words.

1. MAT Syllabus for Intelligence and Critical Reasoning

This section assesses logical reasoning and critical thinking abilities. It includes questions that test the candidate’s analytical skills and the ability to understand and crack complex problems.

Topics:

• Analytical Reasoning: Series, analogy, coding-decoding, blood relations, directions, puzzles, syllogisms, Venn diagrams, and cause and effect.
• Critical Reasoning: Arguments, assumptions, conclusions, and inferences. It tests the ability to analyse, evaluate, and construct logical arguments.
• Decision Making: Questions on making decisions based on given data or situations.
• Non-Verbal Reasoning: Image-based reasoning questions including pattern recognition, mirror images, and paper folding.

1. MAT Syllabus for Mathematical Skills

The Mathematical Skills section tests the quantitative aptitude of candidates. The questions are based on high school-level mathematics and require strong problem-solving skills.

Topics:

• Arithmetic: Percentage, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, simple and compound interest, time and work, time and distance, averages, and mixtures and allegations.
• Algebra: Linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, sequences and series, and logarithms.
• Geometry: Lines, angles, triangles, circles, polygons, and mensuration (area, volume, and surface area).
• Number Systems: Divisibility rules, HCF and LCM, prime numbers, factors, and remainders.
• Trigonometry and Probability: Basic trigonometric identities, heights and distances, probability, and permutations and combinations.
• Data Sufficiency: Determining the sufficiency of information provided to answer a mathematical problem.

1. MAT Syllabus for Data Analysis & Sufficiency

This section evaluates a candidate's ability to analyse data. It includes questions on interpreting data presented in various forms like graphs, charts, and tables.

Topics:

• Data Interpretation: Interpretation of data presented in bar graphs, line graphs, pie charts, and tables. Questions may require calculations and analysis to derive conclusions.
• Data Comparison: Comparison of different sets of data to determine trends, patterns, and discrepancies.
• Caselets: Short cases with data presented in a textual or tabular format, requiring analysis and reasoning.
• Data Sufficiency: Questions that require candidates to assess whether the information provided is sufficient to answer a question.

1. MAT Syllabus for Indian & Global Environment Section

This section tests a candidate's general awareness and understanding of current events, both nationally and globally. It includes questions on current affairs, business, economy, and political events.

Topics:

• Current Affairs: National and international events, awards, sports, and significant occurrences in the past year.
• Business and Economy: Corporate news, mergers and acquisitions, economic policies, budget, and financial terms.
• Politics: Major political events, government schemes, and international relations.
• Social Issues: Topics related to social, cultural, and environmental issues.

How to Prepare for MAT 2024
