Infrastructure and Facilities in State VS Central Medical Colleges: What can we expect in 2025?

As we move towards the year 2025, we can clearly observe that the landscape of medical education is going through significant changes. The central and the state governments are continuously trying to introduce new initiatives in both state and central medical colleges, all the while trying to improve the quality of education. As the world of medical education becomes technologically progressive, the education system and their facilities are upgraded according to the needs of students.

India has a total of 612 government run and 291 private medical colleges. The top five states with the highest medical colleges are Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Telangana. On the other hand, states like Assam, Bihar and Odisha have lower number of medical colleges, ie,. The number of medical colleges is not proportional to their population. Although, by the year 2025, it is anticipated that the number of state medical colleges will increase in number, thereby improving their quality of education and infrastructure as well.

As part of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme(CSS). 157 new government medical colleges have been approved across various states and the number of medical colleges has also increased in number, since the year 2014.

A Comparison Between State Medical Colleges and Central Medical Colleges

As India is a developing country, the landscape of medical education has been undergoing significant changes, with respect to changes in state medical colleges, as well as central medical colleges. With continual improvement of technology comes new challenges faced by the students and the colleges alike, hence, the government is always introducing new initiatives in order to acknowledge new infrastructure and facilities available.

If we were to look at state medical colleges, one of the most significant problems would be funding and maintenance. The amount of funds received by them by the government does not suffice to accommodate the needs and infrastructure needed by the students, hence, most of the students prefer to study in centralized medical colleges. On the other hand, the state colleges are continually trying to upgrade their facilities and amenities according to the initiatives taken by the government, which in turn promises us a change in inadequate facility maintenance. For example, In states like Assam and Karnataka, new medical colleges are being approved by the state government.

The preference for central medical colleges are likely to continue in time, as the quality of education and facilities available at central institutions are much better as compared to state colleges. The central medical colleges open up a door towards research opportunities in the field of medical industry, thereby giving rise to many professionals across various specializations. The central government has tremendously focused on healthcare and has been introducing numerous initiatives to enhance the quality of education.

Campus Facilities in State and Central Medical Colleges

The Campus facilities in state and central medical facilities vary significantly in terms of availability of infrastructure, facilities, resources and overall student experiences. The comparison between the two highlights the key aspects of campus facilities available:

We cannot form a stereotypical viewpoint and believe that state medical colleges have no scope of improvement, because many state institutions across the country are progressing tremendously and thereby, meeting the needs of students. Many new medical colleges are being approved throughout the country. But this expansion comes with a cost, i,e., the availability of infrastructure. The number of medical colleges might be proportional to the population but sufficient infrastructure and technology is not available at the campus, which in turn means that students would have less opportunities of gaining medical experience or expanding their horizons. For example, in the state of Telangana, the rise of medical institutions has raised other concerns, such as inadequate duty rooms for doctors,as well as lesser laboratory equipment.

Central Medical Colleges, such as AIIMS from Delhi, and the others are specifically known for their progressive infrastructure. Their landscape of education is quite progressive as well, as the colleges are equipped with modern classrooms, lecture halls, spacious laboratories and extensive libraries where the students have access to worldwide e journals and digital resources. Their teaching faculty uses audio visual aids to improve the quality of education. Various conferences and lectures are organized, cooperating with international health organizations and the scope for research is vast. Facilities such as excellent hostel environment, 24*7 wifi access, simulation laboratories, are quite common in centralized institutions.

Modern Infrastructure in Medical Colleges

By the year 2025, the field of medical education is set to transform significantly, may it be regarding the number of state colleges across the country or improving the quality of infrastructure overall. It focuses on modernization as the ultimate goal. What does modernization mean? Modernization simply means to enhance the quality of education, thereby improving the health services offered by the hospitals, also a tremendous increase in the number of medical professionals. Modernization will lead to many noted developments in the sphere of medical education, in the upcoming years.

The government of Assam has taken a new initiative, i.e., to establish fourteen new medical colleges by the year 2025, that would in turn promises better healthcare infrastructure. The new medical colleges will be equipped with modern technologies and postgraduate programs, so that the students won’t have to leave the state in the name of higher education. This further means that the number of professional doctors across various specialties will also rise.

Along with the state of Assam, Karnataka is also expanding their number of medical colleges ,i.e., three new medical colleges will be completed by the year 2025. These institutions will possess state-of-the-art facilities and modernized laboratories.

When we talk about modern infrastructure at medical colleges, we immediately think of modern or advanced learning techniques. As compared to the earlier years, the prospects of learning have changed quite a bit. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is currently implementing a project to establish e-classrooms in fifty medical colleges across the country. This initiative will also facilitate distance learning through video conferencing or online classes. Over 65,000 sessions have already been conducted using this particular feature.

Modern infrastructure also comprises modern teaching tools that are completely innovative, such as audio visual aids and 3D projection software inside classrooms to simplify the complex procedures and phenomena. This method is meant to create a more engaging environment between the teachers and the students.

Hospital tie-ups in Medical Colleges

The relationship between hospitals and colleges plays a crucial role in providing practical knowledge and experience to students, all the while improving healthcare services.

Many of the state medical colleges have tie-ups with the local district hospitals. These hospitals serve as the primary teaching ground for students. But there might be some areas where the availability of such hospitals are low, which further means that these areas are underserved. The establishment of new medical colleges ensures that the local population receive quality healthcare services, while the students gain more on-site, practical, experiences.

Central Medical Colleges, such as AIIMS and JIPMER, have their own multi-specialty hospitals that are directly attached to the institution, within the campus itself. As compared to the local hospitals, these institutions are well-funded and equipped with the highest form of medical technology, which in turn provide students with an extensive clinical exposure. The attached hospitals help students in gaining practical hands-on experience, under the guidance of professionals, and under these settings, the focus on research is prioritized. Hence, students have more opportunities to offer better healthcare services to the local population, along with gaining opportunities to engage themselves across various research projects.
